The purpose of this report is to reflect my experience on our group project during and after the workshop

Date: 24th April 2019, Wednesday

For the morning session, we gathered at Bustop KK8 at 7:00 am. We waited for everyone around 40 people for the morning session and departed around 7:30 am. At first, the estimated time for departure is 7:15 am but there were few people who lived far from KK8 so we need to wait for them first.

We reached our destination around 8:00 am. Shahku lead our way to the computer lab and the teachers and students were already there waiting for us. The teacher gave a short brief and separated us into two labs where the main lab will be used for the facilitators to conduct the workshop while the other one for the pc assembly and window installation activities.

There were around 30 to 40 form 4 and form 5 students joined the workshop. All of them are from computer science stream. They sat in a group with everyone have their own 1 Malaysia pc but also certain of them had to share the laptop as not many laptops can be used anymore. Before we started the workshop, the teacher gave a short introduction to the students about the activity for that day while we setting up the projector, laptops and etc. Then, our main 'lecturer', How Yong introduce himself and us and brief them about what they going to learn that day.

For the morning session, we started around 9:00 am and finished at 12:30 pm. The students looked very eager and excited to learn a new things. There were few of students asking many question about this and that, why this and why that, and that me more excited to teach them. They also told that they wanted to pursue their study in computer science field in the future.

As for the facilitators, we had to go around and asked them if they understand or not and explained to them to make the topic clearer. We answered every questions asked.

Next, we continued the evening session at 2:30 pm until 6:00 pm. This session is for form 1 and form 2 students that had zero knowledge about programming etc. As for this, we need to teach them slowly as some of them said that it's a bit hard. We have to repeat them same thing for few times for them to fully adapt that thing.

The workshop ended around 6:15 pm. Everyone looked very exhausted as we have been teaching since the morning until evening. But still, the workshop went well and it was a very good experience for us.

With form 1 and form 2 students

With form 5 students

With form 4 students
During the postmortem, every departments need to present their SWOTs. For our team, one of the strengths that we have is that we have a very talented "lecturer". He helped in preparing the notes for the student and also teach the students during the workshop from morning till evening. As for the weakness, even Jason told that we lack of communications between each other at first place. We couldn't agree more.

We end our project with a brief speech from Dr Reza and take some pictures. Afterall, he was glad that this project has ended and that we all have done our best to make this project success. Kuddos to everyone.

POSITIVE CHARACTERISTICS
  • Responsible. Everyone knows what their task and very comitted towards it. We tried to do our best and give it all out. For example, as the facilitators, we taught the kids from the basic slowly and answered every questions given even if we have to repeat it for so many times.
  • Good manners. Because we have to deal with small kids, everyone was being a very good brothers and sisters. We treated and talked to the kids a happy way to make them like on what they are going to learn.
  • Punctual. For the facilitators, we were very puctual about the time. We started and finished at the exact time. We gathered there first before the kids entered for the second session. This really portrayed how much we comitted to our works.

NEGATIVE CHARACTERISTICS
  • Punctuality. When conducting an event, time management is very important. Everyone should be aware of this as if one person late, he will make everyone also late. This happened in the morning when we were about leaving but there are still few people not coming. If they know, they live a bit far, they should go out a little early and if you cannot wake up early, ask your roommates to wake you up or set a few alarms.

OPINIONS ABOUT POSITIVE CHARACTERISTICS THAT SHOULD BE PRACTICED
  • Being organized. Organisation is essential for the smooth running of a project. Though each individual should be responsible for their tasks and the leader should ensure the members are getting their works and tasks are completed efficiently.
  • Don't stay in the shadows. It is not in good to just sit quietly without contributing any ideas to the team members. It's a good thing to involve with others.

WHETHER OR NOT CHANGE IN ATTITUDE REQUIRE

I can say no because from what I see everyone including myself had done our best. The leader, Jason also lead us perfectly. He always reminded us everything in case any of us forget and always be on time for every meeting and gathering. He distribute the works and give details about it for us to refer.

As for my facilitators team, everyone was amazing. The lecturer, How Young taught the kids in a funny and interesting way to not make the kids feel bored or lost focus. Even though we all already feel tired at the evening but we still continue teaching them. We put aside our tiredness to give our best. We also change the lecturer when we saw that How Yong already tired. This showed our cooperation between each other.

Assalamualaikum and hi.

The workshop is finally done and we had an amazing time together with the students.

There are 2 sessions for the Java workshop; where the morning session is for form 4 and form 5 students that have a bit knowledge about programming while the evening session is for the form 1 and form 2 that haven't learnt programming at all.

Everyone has their own shift either morning or evening but few of us, including me had to teach from the morning till evening. We started at 9 am and finish at 6 pm.

I can say that teaching is very hard especially to new students where they have to adapt with new things. Some of them are eager to learn more, as they said they want to pursue computer science after their secondary school.

That day was very tiring but it was a great experience for me. Glad that we chose this as our project for Social Engagement.

The purpose of this report (phase 1) is to reflect my experience on our group assignment. In this report, I will discuss my experience in relation to selecting the higher committees and the project to conduct, formation of our group, organization of work and how did we distribute our group work.

For the initial stage, the lecturer conducted the first meeting to choose the higher committees. After everyone finished introducing themselves, we decided to select a leader (director) to lead the discussion to be smoother and clearer.

Everyone was gave a chance to suggest their ideas about our future project. Our goal was to produce as many ideas as possible and we listened to all the ideas carefully, categorized and examined them. Then we choose some ideas among all of them. We were asked to vote for the best ideas and rank the ideas in priority order and then finalized them. "Programming Workshop" had the highest votes which mean it is going to be our main project for Social Engagement this semester.

Under Human Resource department, facilitators were chosen. We need to volunteer ourselves if we want to join any departments under Human Resource. They are total of 12 people volunteer including me. I volunteered to join this team because I really like Programming and eager to share my knowledge to the students. Besides, I like to interact with people and teaching them. These will somehow increase my communication skills and also improve my knowledge.

POSITIVE CHARACTERISTICS
  • Me

    - As I was assigned as the Head of Facilitators, my task is to monitor and distribute works together with Er Jia Xin to the members. We have to make sure the tasks finished and submitted on time. By doing this, we can ensure the smoothness of the project and let every members know their roles.

    - Answer every questions asked by the group members in detail. Some of them have messaged me personally to ask regarding their tasks whether or not they can do this and that. Before answer them, I will discuss first with Er Jia Xin and if we are not sure we will direct to Jason. After he approved then we will proceed.

    - Listen to others' feedback and opinions. When they gave any suggestions or ideas to improve the task, we will discuss and if it is relevant, we will accept and add more if relevant.

  • Others

    - Give suggestions to improve the notes. When we have finalized the notes, they will check if there's anything to add to ensure the contents are right and suitable for the students. They will check anything if needed and also added some graphics to make the notes and the slides more colorful and cheerful for the students.

    - Immediately do their tasks when assigned. Right after Er Jia Xin assigned every members to each topics, they immediately do without any question.

    - Director (Jason) monitor the work progress and push us to follow the deadline. He also planned the work accordingly. This is the example of a good leader.
NEGATIVE CHARACTERISTICS
  • Me

    - Late distributing the tasks to the group members. This is because, we chose the heads a bit late. From this I learnt that the leaders' role is very important to ensure every tasks assigned to that small groups.

  • Others

    - Late submitting the assigned tasks. I have learnt that if one person dos not complete their part, the whole group suffers and therefore it is important that each person fulfill their role according to the deadline given.

    - Do not give respond when asked. Sometimes, when someone asked any something especially Jason, no one respond to it including me. That's because we do not know the answer to his question. This is not good, left someone hanging. Instead of not answering, we should at least say we do not know.

    - Not make use of whatsapp group. As we chose the head a bit late, which near to the deadline, everything seems a bit mess at first. The whatsapp group was so silent until Jason start pushing us to start doing the tasks. Right after we distribute the works, everyone seems to start reacting to any messages send.

OPINIONS ABOUT POSITIVE CHARACTERISTICS THAT SHOULD BE PRACTICED

In my opinions, the first positive characteristic is complement others' skills. An important characteristic of an effective team work is the shared capacity. Every members has their own strength and weak spots. A good team leader and team member should provide some unique skills or knowledge that can always move the team forward. This will somehow boost one spirit to keep doing their tasks and ask for more.

Secondly, shares the load. A good team member helps each other when needed. We can also help others when we are done with our task. By doing this, the work process can be done faster and finish early.

Thirdly, communicate with each other more often. As we know, communication is crucial to build a sense of camaraderie between members. Put simply, the more freely we talk to our fellow team members, the more comfortable we are in sharing insights and ideas. Therefore, we should make full use of social media especially Whatsapp where most discussion being held there. Don't just be a silent reader and left someone hanging when they ask something.

WHETHER OR NOT CHANGE IN ATTITUDE REQUIRE

Yes. This is because, some people including me somehow do not know our tasks in detail and how the project going to be at the first place. If we are clueless, we should immediately meet the higher committees and ask for a short brief about the project's detail. We shouldn't just sit there doing nothing and wait to be assigned to any works but ask for any works to help instead. After each people had been assigned to specific task, they finally start to move and asked if there is any confusion. We also helped each other to ease everyone tasks.

As for the facilitators group, during the first meeting Jason has told us to choose 2 heads to lead the team and conduct a lecture during the event, but we did not discuss anything on the whatsapp group. Thus, Jason had to push us and he chosed the heads himself. This thing shouldn't be done at the first place. Because we late choose the heads, the tasks also late being submitted for Jason to go through and check. If we start early, we can finish early and add more but still fortunately, we managed to finish the given tasks before the deadline.

Assalamualaikum and hi.

As for now, we have done with the notes for the students to refer during the event. But a new info that we got is our targeted group is not noobs. They know Phython, PHP, CSS, database and etc which seems like they are much better than us.

Because of that, we can also teach them Java until OOP (Object Oriented Programming) where a bit complex compare to what we discuss before; to teach until for loop. But it all depends on the facilitators themselves to teach until which subtopics.

Not also that, besides coding we can also teach them about work ethics of a programmer. Maybe we can give them advices on how to code efficiently as a team, how to structure their code nicely to be readable and etc.

As for now, we haven't select the heads and assistants yet. Maybe after this week or we will see how, because the heads and assistants are the one who gonna give the lecture to the students.

Assalamualaikum and hi.

On 30th April 2019, we had a meeting to discuss about each departments' progress so far. As for my department, Human Resource, they had recruited few more members. After the meeting with everyone, Jason wanted to meet all the facilitators to give a short brief about our tasks.

We were assigned to make a short module for the students for them to refer during the event and elected 2 heads and 2 assistants. We also discussed about our tasks during the event in detail where each facilitators will assist one student only.

To discuss everything in more detail, HOD of Human Resource also had created a whatsapp group for us to ease the tasks and discussion.

Assalamualaikum and hi.

As for this project, I have volunteered myself to be one of the facilitators (under Human Resource department) during the event. As for now, they haven't tell us more detail about what should we do, our jobscopes and area that we're going to cover. Basically now they just recruiting more members to be under this department. Perhaps, we're going to have a short meeting in the meantime.
